It's Publication Day for The Poet & The Architect!

Of this book, reader Ruth Harper writes:

South Dakota Poet Laureate Christine Stewart-Nuñez has published a tremendous new collection! The Poet and the Architect (2021, Terrapin Books) is an intelligent, loving, masterful assemblage of poems organized in “rings,” extending outward from the highly personal and immediate (e.g., falling in love) to the more long-range and communal (e.g., lasting relationships in the context of supportive scaffolding). The overall theme of her marriage to architect Brian Rex and their increasingly interwoven visions of art and life offer opportunities for metaphor and insight that are stunning in their beauty, power, and originality. Poets construct, just as architects do, working in a different medium that is similarly exacting if done well. It is edifying to glimpse two creative minds informing each other, building and resolving tension, in what feels like real time. (Even poems set in the past grab the heart fiercely.)

I was fortunate to hear the poet read and discuss several of the poems at a recent public gathering. What a treat! But this book requires no explanation. The words are accessible yet gain additional meaning and depth with each rereading, which is why you will want to purchase this fine book. The Poet and the Architect is “the real deal” (my highest compliment).”

Writing & Reading from Art at the Dahl

In March, right before the pandemic began sweeping across South Dakota, I gave a reading and workshop at the Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City.

Reading Description: Intersections of Poetry and Art: An Ekphrastic Reading

After giving a brief historical framework for ekphrasis, I will discuss my approach to making poems inspired by visual art and use examples of my work to illustrate my creative process.

Workshop Description: Writing Poetry Inspired by Art
These writing workshops—identical in content with more writing time in the longer one—will teach participants about the history of ekphrasis, familiarize them with current approaches to ekphrasis, show examples of the genre, and provide guided engagement with current art exhibits at the Dahl Arts Center.
